Microsoft aggressively and abusively positioned Internet Explorer as part of their "browser war" to eliminate all competition. Home Internet access was still somewhat new and competed against proprietary services like CompuServe, AOL, and Microsoft's own MSN. These include vital updates to ensure the web browser is secure to use. Microsoft announced in January 2016 that it will no longer support versions 8, 9 or 10 of Internet Explorer with necessary updates.
